Heart to Heart

Sunday Heart to Heart

The Quiet Lessons of Life

There are some lessons in life that do not come from books, classrooms, conferences, or even the greatest institutions in the world.

They come quietly.

They come through people we meet, places we visit, moments we lose, unexpected kindness, difficult goodbyes, and sometimes, through silence.

Over the years, I have travelled many paths. I have sat with women in villages, listened to children speak about their dreams, spent time with senior citizens, participated in international forums, and had the privilege of being part of conversations at the United Nations.

Yet, when I look back, I realise that some of my deepest lessons were learned far away from the spotlight.

I learned that a small act of kindness can be more powerful than a grand speech.

I learned that every person carries a story we may know nothing about.

I learned that strength does not always look strong. Sometimes, it is the quiet woman who keeps going despite everything life has placed on her shoulders.

I learned that children can teach us courage, elders can teach us patience, and people living with very little can sometimes teach us the greatest meaning of gratitude.

And I learned that service is not about being important.

It is about making someone else feel important.

Perhaps that is why, with the passing years, I have become less interested in titles and more interested in purpose.

Less interested in recognition and more interested in impact.

Less interested in being heard and more interested in listening.

Life has also taught me that not every chapter needs an explanation.

Some chapters simply need acceptance.

Some relationships teach us love.

Some teach us boundaries.

Some teach us forgiveness.

And some teach us to let go—with gratitude for what they once meant.

Today, I believe that our greatest legacy is not what we accumulate, but what remains in the hearts of people after we have crossed their path.

A smile we gave.

A hand we held.

A child we encouraged.

A woman we believed in.

An elderly person we listened to.

A moment when we chose compassion instead of judgement.

These may seem like small things.

But perhaps these are the things that truly matter.

So, this Sunday, I want to pause.

Not to look at how far I have travelled, but to be grateful for every person who has walked a part of the journey with me.

For every lesson.

Every blessing.

Every challenge.

Every beginning.

Every ending.

And for the grace to continue.

Because perhaps life is not about reaching a final destination.

Perhaps it is about becoming a little kinder, a little wiser, and a little more compassionate with every step.

And perhaps the greatest journey is the one that takes us closer to our own heart.

A Sunday thought:

What is one quiet lesson that life has taught you that you will carry forever?

With warmth and gratitude,
Ratna Joshi

Legacy Within - The Journey Continues

 Welcome to

Legacy Within – The Journey Continues

Welcome to my corner of reflection, purpose, and hope.

More than two decades ago, I began a journey of service—not knowing where it would lead, only believing that every act of kindness has the power to create change.

That journey has taken me from villages and classrooms to international forums, including the United Nations. Along the way, I have met remarkable women, resilient children, compassionate senior citizens, dedicated volunteers, and visionary leaders. Each encounter has taught me that real transformation begins with listening, learning, and serving.

This blog is a continuation of that journey.

Here, I will share personal experiences, stories from the grassroots, reflections from global platforms, insights on the Sustainable Development Goals, women’s empowerment, peacebuilding, and the simple yet profound lessons that life continues to teach me.

I do not write as someone who has all the answers. I write as a fellow traveller—grateful for every opportunity to learn, to serve, and to grow.

If even one story inspires a conversation, one idea sparks positive action, or one reflection encourages hope, then these words will have fulfilled their purpose.

Thank you for joining me.

With gratitude,

Ratna Joshi

Returning on this Awesome space after almost a decade

After a quiet pause, I find myself returning to this space with a grateful heart. I began this blog back in 2015–2016, and while life took me on an extraordinary journey of service, learning, and global experiences, these pages patiently waited for my return. There is so much to catch up on, so many stories to share, and so many lessons that I hope will inspire, encourage, and connect us. Welcome back to this journey with me.

UN Women & Me - grassroot to global

UN Women & Me

My First Step Towards a Global Sisterhood

There are journeys we plan, and there are journeys that quietly choose us.

My association with UN Women was never about prestige, recognition, or international platforms. It began with a simple belief—that every woman deserves dignity, opportunity, and a voice.

For years, I worked in villages, sat with women who carried silent pain, encouraged young girls to dream beyond their circumstances, and held the hands of senior citizens who only wanted someone to listen. I never imagined that these small acts of service would one day connect me to a global movement.

The first time I entered a UN Women event, I wasn’t overwhelmed by the grandeur. I was deeply moved by the realization that, across continents, women were carrying the same hopes, the same struggles, and the same determination to create a better world.

At that moment, I understood something profound:

Compassion has no borders.

Every conversation, every session, every shared story reminded me that real change does not begin in conference halls. It begins in homes, classrooms, villages, and communities—where ordinary people choose kindness over indifference.

Through BMI Trust, I have always believed that sustainable development is not just about policies; it is about people. It is about the mother who learns a new skill, the girl who continues her education, the elderly person who feels respected again, and the child who discovers confidence.

UN Women gave me a larger canvas to see that these local stories are part of a global narrative.

I walked into the United Nations carrying the voices of countless women from India. I returned carrying the dreams of women from around the world.

This journey has made me more humble than proud. Every international recognition reminds me of the responsibility that comes with it. Every meeting reinforces that there is still so much more to learn, so much more to do, and so many more lives to touch.

As I begin this blog series, I do not wish to write only about events or conferences. I wish to write about people—the women who inspired me, the lessons I learnt, the moments that changed me, and the quiet miracles of humanity that often go unnoticed.

This is not merely the story of UN Women & Me.

It is the story of every woman who dared to hope.

It is the story of every volunteer who believed that one act of kindness matters.

It is the story of every child whose future can change because someone cared.

And above all, it is a reminder that when women rise together, humanity rises with them.

This is only the beginning.

With gratitude, hope, and faith,

Find yourself

Find yourself ....

Lot of my friends and co workers I always felt where at peace ...and this kept me wondering "How"and why iam not relaxed .... Just the chill sort.
Took to heart and my search began ... Find your self ... Read countless books , journals articles....
It added to confussion
Somewhere inside me I felt what is this"find Yourself"....iam what I am ... But then who iam ...
The day arrived ...
They say the Teacher appears when the student is ready ....
I was at this woman seminar and met legendary " Sindhutai Sapkal".... My question was silly but felt it was right from the heart ... " Mam I want to do something ... For society... Less fortunate... Iam actually confused... But I want to do something "
She smiled and said " did you discuss this with self?"
I was more confused ...
She said relax .... Smile ... Relax .... Listen the deep inner voice .... What you are telling me is what is on the surface of your thought process .... Listen to self voice , is this the same that is deep down in you and your heart ?
First be friend with yourself , spend more time with self and you will get the answer.
To get any answer you need peace first ... Confussion and chaos can lead to a wrong answer.
.......
I was at peace .... I found myself in BMI trust ... My little NGO .... Which is my self.

Facing past continues....

When she looks behind in this peace of today the past appears to be cloudy... As the eyes are filled with tear drops that are not ready to fall in her present as they will create more chaos.
She is not blaming anyone .. No excuse .. No regrets.
Just a question to self ..? Don't you think there was a better approach to life? Without making it so complex and complicated.
Maturity follows after a few setbacks? Very weird but true .. You value things only when you have either lost them or they have left you ... I am talking about TIME the biggest culprit , come what may it just goes on and moves on.
You can lose any thing in life and earn that back but once the TIME has gone it will not come back.
While we were young always heard elders advising us that Don't waste time... Time is money.. Time is precious...
It is and that's the Fact.
Use it with care.
Make use of your life .. Make it worthy.... Something you will be proud of.

Facing the Past continues.....

Some painful and unattended thoughts that she had buried deed ,surfaced.
Distinctly she remembered that it was a Friday and she was very excited that this weekend is going to be very special for her.She was on the invite list of the Book Inauguration function....dress accessories ...makeup ...all was set in her mind without confusion.
He came from work and was in a good mood , not those irritating mood.
She just mentioned that tomorrow she is going to this book inauguration function and the excitement was overflowing. He sternly looked at her and asked who are accompanying and she gave the names of friends... He replied then you can go cause I would not have allowed you alone.
Suddenly she crashed.....she was given permission because of her friends? Doesn't he trust me?
After all these years ...
Then the analysis started ...it's not religion... Not the gender inequality .... It's the male attitude ...
Or is it they see the world as they think.
She did not go .... Of course one more chapter of suppression ...
She did not ask , he did not say ....
